In an early start on Thursday the Ukraine and North Macedonia will meet and strive to score for three points for their second Euro 2020 Group C encounter.
Andriy Shevchenko’s side almost recovered a two-goal deficit against a fierce Netherlands side, but Denzel Dumfries cancelled it out just before the full-time whistle. Similarly, North Macedonia also tasted a defeat against Austria in a thrilling yet one-sided encounter.
Ukraine 2-0 North Macedonia
Ukraine 2-1 North Macedonia
Shevchenko’s side shocked the football world after his side pulled the game in their favour by covering a two-goal deficit.
They were unable to replicate their first game from Euro 2012, but they were almost there. After Wijnaldum broke the deadlock and Weghorst doubled the lead, the Ukrainians were left collecting the ashes.
However, soon after the second half started, Shevchenko’s men started getting other ideas. A classic left-footed strike by West Ham’s Yarmolenko and a leaping header by Yaremchuk saw them cancelling out the Netherlands.
To their dismay, Dumfries rose to the occasion as he converted a cross by Ake into a goal to seal three points for his team.
Ukraine will be fighting for three points today because of the sword that is hanging above their heads.
North Macedonia played their official game in an international tournament a few days ago. Goran Pandev (37) recorded his name as the first goalscorer for North Macedonia in an international competition.
After a gruesome defeat to Ukraine, the North Macedonian side will be brimming with hope and confidence. Their players will have an appetite to fulfil, and they will go out with the sole intention of taking those three points.
Elimination is on the horizon, and the players and their manager know what’s at stake. So, we should be seeing attacking football from both sides, especially North Macedonia, who do not want to be left out in their debut tournament.
The two teams are expected to line up like this:
Ukraine: Bushchan; Karavayev, Zabarnyi, Matviyenko, Mykolenko; Malinovskyi, Sydorchuk, Zinchenko; Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk, Tsygankov
North Macedonia: Dimitrievski; S.Ristevski, Velkovski, Musliu; Nikolov, Bardhi, Ademi, Elmas, Alioski; Pandev, Trajkovski
